GP Connect Send Document

The GP Connect Send Document messaging functionality supports consultations held at another healthcare organisation by sending a summary of the encounter (consultation) back to the patient's registered organisation (i.e. for extended hours support) in a PDF file.

NHS England uses a national standard called Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) for sharing healthcare data. This standard will be used in EMIS Web when sending and receiving messages to ensure patient data can be easily shared between different organisations. Message senders are NHS organisations. Message receivers are GP organisations.

All GP organisations in England have already been enabled to receive these messages via their MESH mailbox. It is important that organisations who will receive GP Connect messages are consulted and made aware prior to any being sent. The design model is built to support cases where a patient is seen from out of area and even nationally. We advise you to consult with your local Network and Governance leads to assess your local processes before activation of GP Connect Send Document.

GP Connect Send Document functionality compliments EMIS Web Consultation Write Back but is more suited for use between different clinical IT systems. Consultation summary information is sent as a PDF in an unstructured format, which creates a Workflow Document Management task that requires a review before filing. If a practice has both functionality enabled then Consultation Write Back will take priority, where the recipient is a patient at an EMIS Web organisation.

Activation and configuring patient types

GP Connect Messaging Configuration will be available from EMIS Version 9.20.6.0300

A GP organisation can configure each patient type (except Regular and Dummy) to decide if they want to automatically send a summary of a consultation given at their practice back to the patient’s registered GP record. If no configuration is setup for a patient type, the clinician is prompted to send the consultation.

  1. Access Organisation Configuration. Click the EMIS bubble , point to Configuration, and then select Organisation Configuration. The Organisation Configuration screen is displayed.
  2. In the navigation pane, click Organisation.
  3. On the ribbon, click Edit. The Edit Organisation screen is displayed.
  4. In the left-hand pane, click GP Connect Configuration. The GP Connect Configuration screen is displayed.
